“Spanning the golden era of Western painting between the 14th and 19th centuries, the 118 artworks belong to what is considered one of the leading private collections in the world,” NPM Director Fung Ming-chu said.
The landscape, portrait, sketch, still life and watercolor pieces are on loan from the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna. Highlights include “Portrait of a Man” by Renaissance icon Raphael from the early 16th century.
Flemish Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens’s 1617 painting “Mars and Rhea Silvia” and Friedrich von Amerling’s “Portrait of Princess Marie Franziska von Liechtenstein at the Age of Two” are also must-sees, as well as rare works by Anthony van Dyck and Dutch legend Rembrandt.
In addition, a selection of antique books, firearms and medals are a special aspect of the exhibition worth experiencing.
According to Fung, the collaboration is the first between the NPM and the House of Liechtenstein. “This event is testament to the Western-Central European country’s acclaimed art diplomacy and a fitting tribute to the museum’s 90th anniversary.”
“Crown of the Alps: Masterworks from the Collections of the Prince of Liechtenstein” runs until Aug. 31 in NPM’s Exhibition Area Two. (YHC-JSM)
